Iowa law states that if you are digging, you must call Iowa One
Call at least 48 hours in advance of digging in order to minimize
the risk of damaging any type of underground facilities. Violation
of the law (Iowa Code: Chapter 480) may result in steep fines or
lawsuits for accidental property or utility line damage; or, in
the worst-case scenario, someone's injury or death.
The marking flags indicate the type
of utility to avoid when digging. The code colors are:
- Red: Electric power lines, cables, conduit
and lighting cables
- Yellow: Gas, oil, steam, petroleum or gaseous
material
- Orange: Communication, alarm or signal lines,
cables or conduit
- Blue: Water, irrigation and slurry lines
- Green: Sewers and drain lines
- Pink: Temporary survey markings
- White: Proposed excavation
- Purple: Reclaimed water
